The 5 Types of Common Cockroaches

Cockroaches, the first thing we see them we would be afraid of them. One of the most common pests to defeat. Did you know that there are more than 4,000 species of cockroach. Imagine there are more than 4,000 species of cockroach roaming among us. Luckily we are narrowing it down to the common 5 types of cockroaches that we would usually call for a cockroaches pest control to save the day. 

German Cockroach

The German cockroaches are one of the most nuisance pests to deal with. The German cockroaches are once believed to have originated in Europe, but recent studies show that these cockroaches came from someplace in Southeast Asia. But it;s now considered a worldwide pest. 

In general, the german cockroaches are flat and oval in shape with 6 legs and a pair of antennae. The German cockroaches can range from ½ inch to ⅝ of an inch long. You are able to distinguish by their light brown to tan in color as well as the two dark stripes down their back. 

The German cockroaches prefer warm and humid environments which are usually close to food and water sources. They produce a “musty” odors and their pheromones are able to trigger allergies. They usually feed on almost anything, ranging from soap, glue and even toothpaste! 

Brown-banded cockroach

The Brown-banded cockroach is one of the smallest cockroaches in the world. It originated from Africa. But you will be able to spot it almost worldwide due to the help of modern transportation like ships and planes. An adult male brown banded cockroach measures about a half-inch long and has fully developed wings. While the Adult females are shorter and stouter, and they have smaller wings. The Brown-banded cockroach has two distinctive brown bands covering its wings and abdomen and they are usually light brown in colour. The Brown-banded cockroach are scavengers by nature; they will eat anything that is organic, that also includes bodily fluids and decaying matter. 

American cockroach

The American Cockroach is one of the largest infesting species in the world and is commonly found outdoors in trees, underneath mulch and drain pipes. This might come shocking to some but the American Cockroach does not come from America instead they were native to Africa and the middle east. The American Cockroach are typically reddish brown with a yellowish figure eight pattern on the back of their head. They are oval in shape and have 6 legs. An adult American Cockroach can range from 1 ¼  inches to 2 ⅛ inches (32 to 54 mm) in length. The American cockroaches are omnivores that consume a wide variety of foods. Like milk, plant shoots, soap, sweet and starchy items.

Smoky brown cockroach

The Smoky brown cockroach is a large species of cockroach it’s closely related to the American Cockroach. The Smoky brown cockroach is uniformly dark brown. The smokybrown cockroach has a dark and shiny thorax. The smoky brown cockroach is a detritivore therefore it feeds on organic matter. The Smoky brown cockroach originated from Africa. These winged roaches actually use their wings for flying and are drawn inside by interior lights.

Oriental cockroach

The Oriental Cockroach, originated from african despite its name. The Oriental Cockroach is also referred to as “water bugs” as they usually can be found near the damp areas or they can be referred to as “black beetle cockroach” due to the dark colour of its body. The Black, greasy and slimy cockroach usually hide out in the deep, dark depths traveling through pipes and drains. Oriental cockroaches carry many foodborne pathogens, transmitting these harmful bacteria to surfaces through their legs and bodies.
